The image is a painting on wood of Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism. He was an 8th-century Buddhist master credited with introducing Buddhism to Tibet.
Padmasambhava is considered a fully enlightened being and a key figure in the propagation of Vajrayana Buddhism.
He is often depicted as the "Lotus-Born" as he is believed to have appeared as a child in a blooming lotus flower.
He is associated with the founding of the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Samye.
His teachings and image are often used as a meditation object in the Dzogchen teachings of the Nyingma lineage.
