Mahakala is a tantric Buddhist deity in the Vajrayana tradition.

He is one of the most important Dharmapalas or protectors of the dharma, and is considered the wrathful and fierce emanation of Avalokiteshvara and Cakrasaṃvara.

Mahakala is also worshipped by Hindus as the ultimate manifestation of Lord Shiva (Paramashiva) and consort of Kali (Maha-Kali) representing the destructive power of Brahman.

A common element of Mahakala masks is the five skulls that adorn his crown, symbolizing the transmutation of the five "kleshas" (negative emotions) into the five wisdoms.

His face is intended to scare evil spirits away from the place he protects and to keep away negative energies, thoughts, and actions.

The design of the mask changes according to its size. Larger masks (24 inches and up) have more details and decorations.
