What is the meaning of the Ganesha statue?

The Hindu god Ganesha is known as the remover of obstacles and the preserver of esoteric knowledge. He is also worshipped as the astrological deity of destiny, karma, intellectual thought, and new beginnings. Worshipping the elephant-headed god is believed to bring good fortune to devotees.

Why an elephant head for Ganesha?
Later, Shiva asked Brahma to go north after descending to earth and to bring the head of the first animal he saw. The first animal was an elephant which was sacrificed for Ganesha. The head was brought and given to Ganesha. This is how Ganesha got the head of an elephant and was also called Gajanana.
